By 1941, Kalamandalam moved to become a public institution. Being under the Kochi Government, Kalamandalam faced a lot of teething problems. With the Government of Kerala assuming power, Kalamandalam was brought under the direct control of the Department of Education. In 1975, Kalamandalam was registered as a society under the Charitable Societies Act. With the formation of the Department of Culture, Kalamandalam became an independent body with administrative powers under the Department of Culture. The funds received from the Government, both plan and non-plan, constitutes the assets of Kalamandalam. The amount that Kalamandalam receives from its performances (Kathakali, Mohiniyattom, Thullal) abroad adds to its revenue.
