These are musical instruments which are made of metals. They are also known as loha vaadyangal (loham means metal). These instruments are mainly used to give rhythm to the symphony. The main purpose of these instruments is to impart rhythm to the instrumental music. Ilathalam, Kuzhithalam, Chengila, Chaplakatta and Haribol are some of the major Idophonic instruments used in Kerala. These instruments are mainly used to give continuing rhythmic effect for traditional orchestras like Thayambaka, Panchavadyam, and Chendamelam in Kathakali Sangeetham (Kathakali Music).
