The Society for the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi was registered in 10th May 1972 with its headquarters at Thrissur as a new society under the T.C. Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act, 1955.

The Akademi is the nucleus of all amateur arts clubs and training institutions in the State and it always stands for the betterment of art forms. Akademi hence keeps a close rapport with the various cultural organizations in the State by holding weekly review meetings. It also disburses annual financial grants to these art organizations. The Akademi is affiliating all cultural institutions in the State. 

According to the memorandum of Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi the 3 areas of interest is defined as follows:

• Dance refers to all kinds of dances prevalent in the state including tribal, folk and traditional dances.

• Drama refers to all kinds of drama including amateur and professional drama.

• Music refers to all kinds of music including instrumental and vocal.
