Kadakkal Devi Temple is a temple noted for its myths and traditions and the uniqueness this temple is that there is neither an idol nor a pujari (priest). The temple annually celebrates the 'Thiruvathira Mahotsavam' and is very popular. The festival is celebrated on Thiruvathira asterism in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February – March).
The festival celebration begins with the Kuthira Ezhunnallathu or Kuthiraeduppu (procession of decorated horse effigies) and the day also witness the offering of Pongala by women devotees to the Goddess. Kuthiyottam, a ritualistic symbolic representation of human bali (sacrifice), is another highlight of Thiruvathira Mahotsavam. The ten-day festival ends with Guruzi (Great Sacrifice) ritual held at night.
The temple also celebrates Thiru Mudi Ezhunallathu, a ritual conducted once in every 12 years. The next festival will be in 2027.
