Pisharikkavu Kaliyattam Festival

Date:06-04-2019 to 13-04-2019

Sree Pisharikkavu Bhagavathy Temple, located at Kollam in Kozhikode town, is one of the famous temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Bhadrakali. The temple is noted for the murals, one of the oldest in the state and also exquisite woodcarvings.  The temple has two sanctum sanctorum and many sub-shrines.

The annual Kaliyattam festival of the temple is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Meenam (March- April). The festival lasts for eight days and Valiya Vilakku will be held on the seventh day. The last day, the Kaliyattam day, the main idol is taken out of the temple in a grand procession. There are various rituals connected with this temple festival such as Varavukal (arrival of oracles from the surrounding temples) and Aarppu Vili (boisterous shouting on auspicious occasions) is a few.

Panchavadyam and caparisoned elephants add pomp to the festival.

The temple also finds a mention in Kottarathil Sankunni’s famed book Aithihyamala. It is believed that the Goddess Bhadrakali was brought here from Goddess Sree Porkali on a sword named Nandakam.
