Mandala Utsavam

Date:17-11-2019 to 27-12-2019

A famous temple dedicated to Goddess Durga, the Lokanarkavu Temple has great historical importance as Thacholi Othenan, the legendary martial hero of Vadakanpattu (Northern Ballads), used to worship here every day. Located around 5kms away from Vadakara in Kozhikode, the temple celebrates two annual festivals, one in the Malayalam month of Vrischikam and the other in the month of Meenam

This main festival held in the month of Vrischikam (mid-November to mid-December), known as Lokanarkavu Utsavam lasts for 41 days. The festival is locally known as Mandalavilakku Festival or Mandala Utsavam. One of the unique features of the festival is that it is the only temple where a folk dance called Thacholikali (similar to Kalaripayattu, the martial art form) is performed.

The Pooram festival held in the month of Meenam (March-April) is for eight days. The festival begins with Kodiyettam (flag hoisting) and concludes with Arattu (holy bath). The major highlight of this festival is the Poorakkali, a ritual art form performed in Bhagavathy Temples and Poorapattu.
