Nenmara Vallangi Vela
Date:03-04-2019 to 03-04-2019
Nenmara Vallangi Vela is the annual festival held for the presiding deity, Mother Goddess, of Sree Nellikulangara Bhagavathy Temple in Nenmara. The vela festival is organised by two desams (regions) namely Nenmara and Vallangi. The festival is celebrated every year on the 20th of the Malayalam month of Meenam (April).
The festival provides an occasion to enjoy some of the colourful folk arts of the region like Kummatti, Karivela and Andivela. On the twentieth day of the festival, magnificent processions with caparisoned elephants are taken out from the two villages to the temple. Once the procession reaches the temple the two desams perform the panchavadyam, the traditional orchestra in a competitive spirit.
Aana Pandal, or elephant pergola, an arch-like structure, is the major attraction of the festival where the caparisoned elephants take position as part of the festivities. Both Nenmara and Vallangi desams will set up the pandal (marquee) which is fully decorated with multi-coloured electric lights is a sight to marvel.
