The temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in this sacred temple is worshipped as Sree Rajarajeswara, which means the Supreme Lord. It is believed that Lord Shiva here has supreme transcendental power and devotees address the Lord as Perumthrikkovilappan, Perum cehellorappam and so on.
Sivarathri is one of the most popular annual festivals celebrated here. The festival commemorates the mythological story of the Lord drinking up poison to save the world. Worshipping Lord Shiva on Sivaratri is believed to liberate one from the cycle of death and birth. Vedic chants,Sankaranarayana Pooja, Bhajans and other cultural events are the other events.
One of the unique features of this temple is the absence of Kodimaram (flag post) and the practice of the whistling the conch. The temple is to be entered through the east gate and worshippers are instructed to walk around the temple. Women are only allowed to enter the temple after the evening rituals.
