Kanava Thoran


Clean squid and cut into square pieces – ½ Kg
Chopped onion – 1 cup
Chopped green chilies – ¼ cup
Chili powder – ½ tsp
Chopped ginger-garlic – 1 tsp each
Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
Crushed pepper – ½ tsp
Masala powder – ½ tsp
Urad dal – 1 tsp
Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
Dried red chilies – 4 nos
Curry leaves - as required
Salt - as required
Grated coconut – 1 cup
Cumin seeds – ½ tsp
Coconut oil - as required

Method of Preparation:

In a pan add squid, dry curry powder (chili, pepper, turmeric, masala), salt and required amount of water. Cook squid. In another pan add 2 tsp oil and splutter mustard seeds. Add curry leaves, dried red chilies and urad dal. To this add chopped onion, green chilies, ginger, garlic and sauté well. Add cooked squid and sauté till the water reduces completely. Grind coconut and cumin seeds coarsely. Add this to the thoran. Close the lid and cook for 2 minutes. Mix well and serve hot.
