Sacred Thread Ceremony for Mizhavu

Mizhavu is a large pot shaped native drum made of copper. It is the main percussion instrument of Kutiyattam, Chakyarkoothu and Nangiyarkoothu, the ancient art forms of Kerala. The playing surface is the mouth of the pot which is covered tightly with a hide.The video is about the Upanayanam ritual being given by Hindu priests to two new Mizhavus. The initiation ritual involves the chanting of various hymns and the tying of the sacred thread to the Mizhavus. The ceremony is concluded by playing the drums.
